Trained Austrian architect Paul Frankl immigrated to New York in 1914 where he then switched to designing furniture, and painting. Paul more than any other designer helped to forged a uniquely American design aesthetic helping to shape a very distinctive look of American Modernism. His style continuously evolved from his early skyscraper furniture to more casual designs favoured by the Hollywood elite during the 1930's. In 1934 he moved permanently to Los Angeles where he taught in university's and designed for furniture companies like Lane, Johnson and Grand Rapids in the 1950's.Â
